Liberty County Estate Inventory – William Johnson

These antebellum estate inventories and appraisals generally included all the deceased person’s “property,” including enslaved persons. Only those names are documented here for historical and genealogical purposes. Anyone interested in the actual property owned by the deceased may find it at the link at the bottom of the page. Names are listed in the original order, as this often gives very valuable information about family groupings or the age of children (who may be listed in age order).

Location: Liberty County, Georgia
Deceased: William Johnson [see comments]
Date Sworn: 1844-12-31
Appraisers: D.B.M. Shephard, Asa Warnall, Benj. [Benjamin] Weathers
Estate Guardian: Z.L. Boggs J.P. [see comments]
Court Officer: Z.L. Boggs, J.P.
Date Recorded: 1845-02-14
Recording Official: J.S. Bradwell, Clerk
Total Value of Property Appraised: $5568.64
Value of enslaved persons: $4225.00
Comments: This was described as “the estate of William Johnson, lunatic,” and Z.L. Boggs was said to be his guardian. On 7 October 1844 Z.L. Boggs was declared by the court to be Johnson’s guardian, describing Johnson as a “lunatic or idiot.” It is not clear whether William Johnson’s estate was being appraised because he had died, or because he had been declared a lunatic and his property needed to be appraised to be turned over to the guardian. This would require more research.
